Finding a Reputable Beagle Breeder

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Beagle!

You’ve decided you want a Beagle puppy, and after doing some reading you’ve learned that buying a puppy from a reputable Beagle breeder is your best option.  You might, however, be wondering exactly how to go about finding good Beagle breeders.  You’ll want to be sure your new puppy’s breeder is dedicated to raising healthy, well-adjusted, happy dogs.

Get Recommendations from Knowledgeable People

Getting recommendations from knowledgeable people is one of the best things you can do when you’re looking for a few good Beagle breeders.  People such as dog trainers, veterinarians, local breed club members, people who show dogs and others who work with Beagles regularly will know which Beagle breeders are reputable and which ones aren’t.  These people are all concerned about dogs and their welfare, and they’ll be happy to recommend the breeders they feel are responsible.

Investigate for Yourself

Once you create a list of a few Beagle breeders, you can start checking them out for yourself.  Recommendations are always helpful, but you need to find a breeder you can trust so you’ll feel more comfortable that the puppy you buy has been raised in the healthiest and most loving way possible.

Begin by getting in touch with a breeder and ask if you can set up a personal visit.  If a breeder resists, he or she probably has something to hide, so move on to the next breeder on your list.  Any reputable breeder should be thrilled that you want to visit and evaluate things for yourself.  And, a good breeder will want to meet you as well, in order to determine whether you’d be a good match for one of his or her puppies.  After you arrive on the breeder’s premises, take note of the following:

  • The overall cleanliness of the property and its facilities.
  • The type and quality of equipment and supplies on the property. A breeder who is eager to improve the breed will have whelping beds and other pieces of equipment to ensure the dogs are being taken care of properly and are always comfortable.
  • Where the puppies live and play. Do they have a safely fenced outdoor area to play in, and do they live indoors in an air conditioned, heated area?
  • Whether both parents are present on the property. The puppies’ mother should certainly live there, although it’s possible their father might live elsewhere. Good Beagle breeders strive for puppies with specific characteristics, and often pay another breeder a stud fee for the services of the male. Even then, however, a reputable breeder should be happy to tell you about the father’s temperament and other characteristics. And a good breeder should want to show you the puppies’ mother.

A good breeder will ask you a number of questions as well.  In fact, you might feel as though you’re being interrogated.  It might make you a little nervous, but it’s also proof the Beagle breeder wants to find the right homes for his or her puppies and make sure you’re the right fit.

In short, finding a reputable Beagle breeder involves finding someone who truly cares for dogs, the breed, and what happens to the puppies both before and after they go home with their new families.
