Im sure all of you beagle owners have a problem like mine. I have a 2 year old beagle that does nothing but wine and bark when I am not in the apartment. I refuse to get her a shock collar to stop the barking, so I was thinking of getting her another beagle or something or the same size to keep her happy while im at work or with the lady. What should I get or for fellow beagle owners, does having another beagle keep them happy and quiet?

another dog is not going to solve the problem … your dog has separation anxiety and is not just bored … your new dog will just learn to bark and make noise from the current one … have you considered more exercise, tire the dog out before you leave ??? would you consider crate training ??? and a shock collar would be extreme but what about a citronella collar would not … not cruel and stopped my dog barking in the apartment within a week …

yeah ya see, you need to set rules and boundaries for both dogs so that the beagle will accept the shephard into the pack….

I just got a beagle not too long ago, and I want to house break him, as far as using the bathroom outside and not jumping up on the couch and things like that.

When my dad was training our dogs, he would take them outside if they looked like they needed to go, or he would just take them out right after eating so they got the idea to go outside. It just takes some time. Treats afterward help to make it more solid.

As for jumping on the couch, a smack to the back side and moving him off the couch or whatever tends to work.

My beagle is about 2 years old, and has lived in a decent sized house with a good sized yard and a run. I am moving to the city soon and want to make it as easy a transition as possible for him and my neighbors.
Other than taking him on long walks, how can I help my country dog adjust?

You'll have one very unhappy-howly beagle, even with long walks if it has to live in apartment! If you can, i would also double his exercise require if you have to live in apartment without a yard. Try a find a place with at least a small backyard, ideal large backyard.

Owner Level;

Experience owners. Not good breed for 1st time owners!

Temperment;

BEAGLES-Lots of incorrect info in BOTH books & Internet but here the shocking truth! Beagles are HIGHLY energetic BREED, who being a scent hound, shouldn't be let off- lead as THIS BREED would just follow scent-trails. They love to dig, bark and howl and require, they are stubburn and difficult to train, but do require intensive training!
a very common breed to be surrendered at shelters, so please research this breed before you decide to adopt. They require very tolerant owners! Not suitable with small animals. The Beagle is an all around happy dog that makes a wonderful companion.

Origin:

Great Britain

Breed Purpose:

The Beagle was used to hunt hares, game birds and rabbits

Dog breed Club/or Organisation Group:

Continental Kennel Club(CKC), Federation Cynologique Internationale(FCI), American Kennel Club(AKC), United Kennel Club(UKC), Kennel Club of Great Britain(KCGB), Canadian Kennel Club(CKC),Australian National Kennel Club(ANKC), National Kennel Club(NKC), New Zealand Kennel Club(NZKC), American Pet Registery Inc(APRI), American Canine Registery(ACR).

Height:

Bitches 13-15inches(33-38cm), Dogs 14-16inches (36-41cm)

Weight:

Bitches 20-23pounds(9-10kg), Dogs 22-25pounds(10-11kg)

Lifespan:

12-15yrs

Exercise Needs:

4KM DAILY WALKS

Child Age Suitablity
This breed does extremely well with all aged children.

Health Problems;
Heart Disease, Epilepsy, eye problems, back problems, chondroplasia(Dwafism gene causing warped front legs)

Living Conditions:

Due to nature of them prone to howl and bark, Not recommend for apartment life, best suited to large fenced in backyard.

Grooming:
1 weekly brush, and bath-once a month. Average shedding

here's a good answer on beagles NOT in apartments!

My 5 month old male beagle puppy is pretty special in my opinion, and although I do not know much about it, I think he has the potential to be a great therapy dog. (...)

My 5 month old male beagle puppy is pretty special in my opinion, and although I do not know much about it, I think he has the potential to be a great therapy dog. He is incredibly calm, loves people, loves affection and responds very well to reward based training.

Does anyone own a therapy dog? Or know of how I might go about training my beagle to become one?

Jazzie, I'd love an answer from you!

Thank you!

In the US, there are many therapy dog groups. The most famous is probably TDI (link below). On their website you will see all the tests the dog needs to successfully do to be a therapy dog with TDI. Your dog must be 1 year old to be registered with TDI.

Other pet therapy groups include Pets On Wheels and Therapy Dogs Inc (no to be confused with the more prominant and longer existing Therapy Dogs International, which is above).

All groups require a stable temper, as well as basic training of some sort.

I'd start by calling nursing homes and hospitals in your area, ask for the "activities director" and tell them you're working on having a therapy dog and what do they require. Depending on the facility, some already have groups you can join, others will welcome you with just a CGC.

Each place has it's own specific rules. Because I like to make my own schedule and just walk around from room to room, I contacted nursing homes until I found one that would allow me to do that.

Therapy dog work is some of the most rewarding work you can do with your dog. Good Luck!
