Unlike humans, Beagles do not have the sense of privacy. Naturally, they are not afraid to leave their bodily waste on the carpet. To them it is not as gross. Therefore as an owner you must be prepared to house break your Beagle when it is still a baby. And like human babies, Beagles are going to have their mishaps from the time they are babies to adults; but it will be your job to break them and encourage them to treat your house like a house rather than a toileting area.
Like a human baby, your baby Beagle needs to have boundaries. It is important that you establish where the dog can go, where the dog can sleep and where the dog can use the bathroom. All three are important because boundaries establish that this is your place and that you control your home. It is also important that you maintain rigid rules of the house. If you send mix messages, you will only confuse the Beagle.
Every young Beagle will have a share of accidents. How you respond will play a big part in house training your beagle. It is understandable that you will get angry after you find a wet spot or smell something unpleasant. The biggest mistake that many people make is scolding the dog. It is not that uncommon to drag the dog over and rub their noses in it. This teaches the dog directly that bodily functions can be a source of punishment.
A better idea would be to clean the mess up and ignore the dog. Showing neither positive nor negative responses will only encourage the baby beagle to do it again. If you catch them in the act, then you can yell “No!” and guide them in the right direction
As a puppy, the Beagle will be eating and digesting much faster than that of a senior beagle. Therefore, you should be taking the dog outside much more often. At a young age, you should try to teach the Beagle to go to the same spot when using the bathroom. By having a spot in the yard or on the pathway, the Beagle will find a comfortable spot. When they become accustomed to the spot, going anywhere else will be strange.
Lastly, the crate is an excellent source of house breaking your baby Beagle. The den will serve as the Beagle’s bedroom. It will become a place that he or she eats, sleep and play. It is a place that the puppy will use as a toilet only as a last resort. Keep in mind, that if the crate is used as punishment, you will only slow your progress down.
House breaking baby Beagles can be frustrating, exhausting and hard work but persistence and patience will be the test. The better your approach is the faster you can housebreak your baby beagle and be on your way with teaching the pup other basics.
